The family of a man, Matthew Upham, aged 63, who is feared to have drowned during a Christmas Day swim in Budleigh Salterton, Devon, has released a heartfelt tribute. Upham, a local antiques business owner, was reported missing along with another man after being swept out to sea in rough waters.

In a statement posted on their business’ Instagram account on Boxing Day, Upham’s family expressed their sorrow over his disappearance. They acknowledged the efforts of the emergency services, including the RNLI and coastguard, for their diligent response in the challenging situation.

Following concerns about individuals in the water on Christmas Day, emergency services were alerted at 10.25 am. The search operation involved multiple rescue teams and lifeboats but was halted as night fell on Thursday.

Described by friends as a kind and cheerful individual, Upham was known for his regular swimming routine and familiarity with the local waters. Speculations suggest that the other missing man may have attempted to assist Upham before both were carried away by the waves.
