Novak Djokovic has expressed his opinion on the recent emergence of rising tennis stars Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, suggesting that their success does not match the dominance of himself, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray in the past. Despite Djokovic’s 24 Grand Slam titles, Alcaraz and Sinner have been on a winning streak, securing nine out of the last 10 major championships.
While Djokovic praised the young duo for raising the bar in tennis and standing out from their peers, he emphasized that their achievements are not unprecedented. During a press conference, Djokovic corrected a reporter who suggested that he credited Sinner and Alcaraz with elevating the sport, stating that their level of play simply surpasses that of others currently in the field.
Between 2003 and 2023, Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray dominated the Grand Slam scene, setting a high standard for excellence. Djokovic leads with 24 Grand Slam titles, followed by Nadal with 22 and Federer with 20. Alcaraz and Sinner, on the other hand, have been making their mark by clinching nine of the last 10 major titles and meeting in the last three Grand Slam finals.
Alcaraz, with six major wins, has triumphed over Sinner at the US Open and French Open, while Sinner, a four-time Slam champion, defeated Alcaraz at Wimbledon and the Australian Open this year. The duo’s impressive performances have raised the possibility of challenging Djokovic’s record, although the Serbian has cautioned that maintaining such dominance is no easy feat.
As Djokovic nears Margaret Court’s record as the most successful tennis player, his journey to a 25th title has encountered obstacles. At 38, Djokovic faces physical challenges from injuries and a decline in recent major successes. In contrast, Alcaraz and Sinner show no signs of slowing down, posing a formidable challenge to Djokovic’s pursuit of further glory. However, Djokovic’s resilience and track record suggest that he should not be counted out.
