Dolly Parton, the iconic country music legend, is set to bring her life story to Broadway through a new musical titled “Dolly: A True Original Musical.” This production, scheduled to debut in New York City on December 7 this year, will showcase the journey of Dolly from her humble beginnings to stardom, featuring a mix of new songs created for the show and some of her classic hits like “I Will Always Love You,” “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” and “9 to 5.”
In a video announcement, the 80-year-old singer-songwriter emphasized that the musical will delve into her authentic life experiences, including struggles, losses, and triumphs. Parton expressed her excitement, stating, “It’s about where I really come from, what I’ve lived, what I’ve lost, what I’ve loved, and how I found my way.”
Having already achieved immense success in her career, with over 3,000 songs written and more than 100 million albums sold worldwide, Dolly Parton’s musical endeavor marks a significant milestone. The show’s director, Bartlett Sher, highlighted the profound impact Parton has had on audiences, noting their deep connection with her inspiring and joyful presence.
The musical, which had a successful premiere in Nashville last summer, received overwhelming support from fans, leading to sold-out performances at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts. Parton’s narrative in the show aims to go beyond the glitz and glamour, offering an unfiltered look at her life, as she asserts that “rhinestones were never her whole story.”
