Despite it not being allowed, she decided to take them home and restore them with her partner’s help.

To her surprise, a stranger revealed that she had dropped off the chairs earlier that day after using them for 20 years at her cottage. With some repairs, the chairs became a perfect addition to Meg’s backyard, where she enjoyed relaxing by the fire pit.

Working every Saturday from April to November, she assisted visitors in sorting waste at the transfer station, where items were stored temporarily before being sent to a landfill. Simcoe County boasted the second-highest landfill diversion rate in Ontario, and Meg was pleasantly surprised by people’s willingness to sort their items correctly, despite not always knowing how.
Beyond directing waste disposal, Meg found herself listening to people’s stories about what they were discarding. From faulty coasters to sentimental belongings like a late mother’s paints, each item carried a unique tale. She also encountered individuals like Freddy, tasked with disposing of unsellable donations for a charity, highlighting the emotional aspect of waste management.
Reflecting on society’s consumption habits, Meg pondered over the disposal of a toy fire engine that her children had outgrown. Despite efforts to find it a new home, she faced challenges due to changing donation policies and a lack of interest from others. This experience prompted her to question the reasons behind purchasing items that eventually end up discarded.
