The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced an upcoming update on the review of the Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

PIP is a benefit provided to individuals requiring additional assistance due to health issues or disabilities. Proposed adjustments to PIP, including modifications to the assessment scoring system, were abandoned by the Labour party after facing opposition from MPs, disability organizations, and advocates.

The Government is currently evaluating the criteria for PIP claims, with a final decision expected by autumn 2026. Sir Stephen Timms, the Minister for Social Security and Disability, is spearheading the review, focusing on the comprehensive PIP assessment process.

Most PIP applicants are required to undergo a health evaluation via phone, video call, or in-person before determining their eligibility. Sir Stephen recently shared an update on the Timms Review in response to a parliamentary inquiry.

Bradley Thomas, Conservative MP for Bromsgrove, inquired about the schedule for reviewing the PIP assessment process and the involvement of disabled individuals, caregivers, and the general public in the review.

In a recent written response, Sir Stephen Timms emphasized the importance of incorporating the lived experiences of disabled individuals, advocacy groups, healthcare professionals, caregivers, experts, and MPs in the review process. He confirmed that the review’s leadership team will predominantly consist of disabled individuals and stressed the collaborative nature of the engagement process.

Sir Stephen stated, “We anticipate the review to be concluded by Autumn 2026, after which it will be presented to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions for further action, which may involve legislative adjustments or other non-legislative measures.”

The review aims to gather diverse perspectives and insights from disabled individuals, advocacy groups, welfare charities, and experts to inform its recommendations. Updates on the review progress are expected to be provided in the near future.
