Starting this summer, every 11th-grade student in England will have access to their GCSE exam results through a digital app. Despite still visiting schools on results day to receive grades and interact with teachers in person, students will find their results on the “Education Record” app.
This initiative aims to streamline the process for students applying to post-16 education or jobs by eliminating the need for physical certificates. According to Skills Minister Jacqui Smith, the app grants students immediate access to their results, reducing the burden of searching for paper certificates and easing the workload of educators and college staff.
Additionally, the app will contain other student details, such as special educational needs, disabilities (Send), and eligibility for free school meals. Upon college enrollment, students can conveniently share their information with the college via a QR code scan.
The Department for Education estimates that the app could save schools and colleges up to £30 million annually in administrative costs once fully implemented. This follows a successful pilot program last summer involving numerous young individuals in Greater Manchester and the West Midlands.
NAHT union General Secretary Paul Whiteman welcomed the digital education record for students, highlighting its expansion to a national pilot as a positive move. Pepe Di’Iasio, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, commended the use of digital technology to simplify the transition to post-16 education, emphasizing the importance of secure and accessible student achievement records.
