“Family Pays Tribute to Grandfather After Fatal Pub Assault”

The family of a grandfather who passed away six days following an assault outside a rural pub has shared a heartfelt tribute. David Darke, also known as Dave to his loved ones, lost his life after the attack at The Crown Inn in Appleby Magna, Leicestershire, on December 21. Suffering a severe head injury, the 66-year-old was swiftly taken to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, where he later succumbed to his injuries. A 36-year-old individual, re-arrested on suspicion of murder, is currently in police custody.

In a poignant statement, Mr. Darke’s family described him as a cherished father of three daughters and a proud grandfather of three grandsons. They remembered him as a beloved brother and friend, emphasizing that his memory will endure in their hearts and minds. Described as a strong, active, intelligent, and kind individual who was universally liked, Dave was known for his devotion to his family, passion for the outdoors, nature, and hiking. The family mourned his untimely passing and expressed that he is now reunited with his caring parents, leaving a void in the lives of all who knew and loved him.

A spokesperson from Leicestershire Police confirmed that the investigation into Mr. Darke’s death, led by the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU), is ongoing. Authorities continue to seek information from potential witnesses who have not yet come forward.

Detective Inspector Kevin Hames of the East Midlands Special Operation Murder Investigation Team stated, “Our initial inquiries identified several witnesses and reviewed CCTV footage from the vicinity. We urge individuals who were in the Church Street area on the evening of the incident to reach out to assist us in reconstructing the events of that night.” Specialized officers are providing support to Mr. Darke’s family during this challenging time.
