A childhood fascination with a Canadian TV show set in Prince Edward Island led Patty Czajka to attend a fan convention centered around the series, “Road to Avonlea.” Czajka, who grew up watching the show with her grandmother, particularly admired actress Mag Ruffman, known for her role as Aunt Olivia in the 1990s series.
Fans from around the globe gathered on the Island for the sold-out convention celebrating the award-winning Canadian series, which aired in over 100 countries from 1990 to 1996. Based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novels, the show followed the story of Sarah Stanley, played by Sarah Polley, who was sent to live with her mother’s relatives at the turn of the 20th century.
The three-day convention featured various activities, including oyster and wine tastings, panel discussions with the show’s cast and crew, and visits to filming locations and historical sites related to Montgomery, such as her birthplace and the house that inspired “Anne of Green Gables.”
Edward Lemon, assistant director of Fine Book Fairs, expressed his belief that the show’s enduring popularity stems from its themes of kindness, friendship, and escapism. He hopes the series will continue to attract new audiences and that conventions will still be successful in the future.
Mag Ruffman, who portrayed Aunt Olivia, shared her joy at connecting with fans at the convention and reflected on the lasting impact of the show on both viewers and the cast. Czajka, now watching the series with her own children, appreciates the opportunity to share a show with timeless appeal that can be enjoyed by multiple generations.
