Sky Q, a popular TV device in the UK for over a decade, has been renowned for its extensive content recording capabilities. However, a potential competitor, Freely, is emerging with similar features but without any subscription fees required.
Freely, integrated into many new TVs, enables viewers to access live and on-demand content via the internet without the need for traditional aerial connections. While initially exclusive to new television purchases, Freely is expanding its reach by introducing a dedicated set-top box that can be connected to existing TVs, challenging the dominance of Sky Q.
Humax is manufacturing the Freely set-top box, offering not only free access to television but also the ability to record shows, akin to Sky Q. Additionally, the device is 4K-compatible, providing viewers with high-definition visuals that are four times superior to standard HD quality.
Although the price for the Freely box may start at under £250, it offers free content viewing without any additional fees. While an exact launch date for the new Freely boxes is yet to be announced, they are expected to hit retailers soon.
Notably, an online listing for the Freely box was briefly available before being removed, suggesting a potential premature reveal. Updates on any developments will be provided promptly.
According to Jonathan Thompson, CEO of Everyone TV, Freely aims to democratize access to free TV without the necessity of TV upgrades or paid subscriptions by introducing plug-and-stream devices.
While Freely competes with Sky Glass, Sky Stream, and Sky Q in terms of features, it lacks access to premium content like sports, movies, and box sets from channels such as Sky Atlantic or Sky Max. Moreover, it does not support platforms such as Netflix within its ecosystem.
To access premium content like Netflix and a wide array of entertainment, users may opt for Sky’s subscription plans, starting at £15 per month and often including additional services.
