George and Amal Clooney have officially announced their decision to depart the United States after obtaining French citizenship. They are part of a growing trend of celebrities relocating from America.
The couple, aged 64 and 47 respectively, tied the knot in 2014 and recently purchased a property in Provence, France, where they are considering moving. Reports indicate that following the holiday season, George, Amal, and their eight-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, became French nationals.
Numerous French media outlets have corroborated this information. George has previously expressed his fondness for France and the couple’s desire to raise their children there.
In an interview with Esquire, the actor shared, “Yeah, we’re very lucky. … A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid, I hated the whole idea of it. But now, for them, it’s like — they’re not on their iPads, you know? They have a much better life. I was worried about raising our kids in LA., in the culture of Hollywood. I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life.”
George also mentioned his efforts to learn French ahead of the relocation. The pair currently resides near Brignoles, France, while also owning properties in Los Angeles, South Oxfordshire, England, Lake Como, Italy, and Los Cabos, Mexico.
Several other American stars have opted to leave the US for overseas destinations in recent years. Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi relocated to the Cotswolds in November 2024, Rosie O’Donnell moved to Ireland with her son, Lily Collins settled in Copenhagen in 2023, Pamela Anderson returned to Vancouver Island in Canada in 2020, and Amber Heard moved to Madrid, Spain, following her legal battle with Johnny Depp.
Eva Longoria has been dividing her time between Spain and Mexico for work commitments. The Clooneys’ decision to move comes shortly after George shared the passing of his sister, Ada, at 65, after her battle with cancer. He paid tribute to her as his “hero” and expressed his deep sorrow alongside Amal.
