GP Suspended for Faking Appointments to Pick Up Kids

A doctor who fabricated in-person appointments to avoid being late for picking up her children from school has been prohibited from providing medical care to patients.

Dr. Helen Eisenhauer, a mother of two, was concerned that last-minute consultations scheduled by her colleagues would cause her to run late for her childcare duties. To ensure she could make it on time, the part-time physician invented two face-to-face appointments for patients whom she had already spoken to over the phone earlier that day.

Her deception was uncovered when a colleague at Stenhouse Medical Centre in Arnold, Notts, noticed discrepancies in her scheduling and confronted her about it. It was revealed that Eisenhauer not only fabricated appointments but also blocked off time in the late afternoon to avoid seeing other patients.

Initially denying any wrongdoing, the GP eventually reported herself to the General Medical Council and was suspended from practicing for five months after confessing to misconduct charges.

During the tribunal, she admitted to falsifying the booking schedule, citing extreme exhaustion from parenting duties as a contributing factor. She acknowledged her dishonesty, emphasizing that her personal struggles did not excuse her actions.

Dr. Eisenhauer expressed remorse, stating, “I have since made significant progress in balancing my responsibilities at home and work. I understand the importance of honesty in both my personal and professional life and the consequences of deceit on public trust in the medical profession.”

Katie Jones from the GMC criticized Eisenhauer for her dishonesty, stating that it posed a risk to patient safety and undermined collaborative efforts among colleagues. The Chairman of the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service, Neil Dalton, also condemned her actions, highlighting the disregard for professional standards and patient well-being displayed throughout the incident.

Eisenhauer’s lack of transparency with her colleagues during the investigation further exacerbated the severity of the situation. By falsifying records, she not only compromised patient safety but also prioritized her own interests over those of her patients.
