“Indonesia Struggles After Deadly Earthquake”

Share

Thousands of individuals in Flores, Indonesia, awaited assistance on Monday following a powerful earthquake that resulted in at least 68 deaths, over 200 injuries, and extensive damage to numerous structures. Residents in the affected areas, particularly in East Nusa Tenggara province, were still isolated and grieving as they anticipated aid delivery.

The earthquake, with a depth of 10 kilometers, struck early Saturday morning, causing severe destruction to over 4,500 homes, forcing around 19,000 people into temporary shelters, and injuring 213 individuals. Additionally, critical infrastructure such as health facilities, schools, and places of worship suffered significant damage.

President Prabowo Subianto led a moment of silence during Indonesia’s Independence Day ceremony to honor those impacted by the disaster. The situation prompted the declaration of a 14-day state of emergency by the province’s governor on Sunday, with ongoing aftershocks adding to the challenges faced by the affected communities.

Efforts to provide aid were hindered by logistical obstacles, with nearly 1,500 military and police personnel deployed to distribute 275 tonnes of relief supplies. Emergency field hospitals were established in Ruteng to treat the injured, as rescue teams continued to search for potential victims in the affected regions.

Remote areas, like Palue Island, faced difficulties in receiving aid due to blocked roads caused by landslides. Despite the treacherous journey, emergency supplies eventually reached the island, offering much-needed assistance to residents in urgent need.

Indonesia, situated along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is prone to seismic activities, including earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The recent earthquake in Flores revived memories of past tragedies, such as the devastating events in 1992 and 2004, highlighting the region’s vulnerability to natural disasters.
