A visitor passed away in a vacation apartment in Spain after being discharged from the hospital twice. Letizia Ciampi started experiencing breathing difficulties and chest pains shortly after arriving on December 31. Her friend took her to the emergency room, where she had an X-ray. Doctors discharged her, attributing her symptoms to stress, and advised further tests upon her return home.
Despite no improvement in her condition at the vacation flat in Corralejo, Fuerteventura, she returned to the hospital that afternoon by ambulance. After receiving IV fluids and medication, she was discharged again. Letizia messaged her friend, expressing her inability to attend their planned New Year’s Eve dinner. Concerned when she couldn’t reach her on January 1, her friend contacted the landlord the next day.
Firefighters had to break into the locked apartment where they found Letizia, aged 47, unresponsive on the bed with some blood drops on the sheet. She was from Bagno a Ripoli near Florence, Italy, and worked as a sales agent for a food company. Letizia was described as sporty, health-conscious, a gym-goer, and enjoyed playing padel. She had also been involved in politics, running for office in Florence with Silvio Berlusconi’s party.
She had traveled to Fuerteventura for a short winter getaway and to visit her friend. Italian media reported her friend Patrizia Faraoni as saying Letizia had complained of flu before the trip, and the hospital visits indicated a serious illness. Spanish authorities have ordered a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of her death.
There are speculations in Italian media that she might have suffered a pulmonary embolism or pulmonary edema that went undetected. Her mother expressed deep grief, saying, “She was all I had, it was just the two of us, my beloved daughter. I don’t know how to go on.”
