Loblaw, a leading grocery retailer based in Brampton, Ontario, reported an increase in profits for the second quarter. The company’s success is attributed to its ability to attract cost-conscious shoppers to its discount chains such as No Frills and Maxi. Sales in the pharmacy unit experienced the strongest growth, driven by the popularity of generic GLP-1 weight loss medications.
In the financial report for the three-month period ending June 20, Loblaw disclosed that its revenue reached over $15.3 billion, marking a four percent increase from the previous quarter. Profit available to common shareholders also saw a significant rise of approximately five percent, totaling $751 million.
The company noted a 1.6 percent growth in same-store sales for its core retail food business, while its drug retail unit, including Shoppers Drug Mart, reported a 4.6 percent increase in same-store sales. The pharmacy and health-care services segment drove this growth, with a 7.5 percent gain.
During a conference call with analysts, Loblaw’s chief financial officer, Richard Dufresne, highlighted the impact of generic GLP-1 drugs on the company’s pharmacy performance. He mentioned that the lower pricing of generic drugs is being balanced by higher sales volumes, leading to expectations of increased revenue and profit margins.
The company has observed a 40 percent year-to-date increase in sales of GLP-1 drugs, a trend that was first noted in the previous quarter. CEO Per Bank mentioned that customers are shifting towards frozen vegetables over fresh produce due to inflationary pressures, with a notable increase in frozen vegetable sales at No Frills and Maxi stores.
Loblaw remains optimistic about its position in the market, particularly in the hard discount segment, as consumers continue to prioritize value amidst food price inflation. The company’s shares traded steadily on Thursday, reflecting a six percent year-to-date gain.
