A man was fatally shot by police following a reported two-vehicle crash. In Thetford, a road closure occurred overnight as Norfolk Constabulary confirmed the death of a man shot by police near the crash scene.
The incident unfolded on London Road around 8:25 pm on Sunday, December 28, in response to a two-vehicle collision. The individual, suspected to be one of the vehicle drivers, left the scene carrying a handgun.
Upon the arrival of armed response officers, the suspect was shot by the police a short distance away and was pronounced dead despite emergency service interventions. The A11 is currently closed in both directions from the Thetford Ranges roundabout to the Brandon Road roundabout.
Assistant Chief Constable David Buckley stated, “This incident may raise community concerns. While our armed officers respond to numerous firearms-related incidents annually, police firearm discharges are fortunately rare occurrences.”
He added, “A comprehensive independent investigation is already in progress. We are fully cooperating with the IOPC investigation, providing all body-worn camera footage and 999 calls for transparency. No other individuals are being sought in connection with the incident.”
The A11 closure spans from the Thetford Ranges roundabout to the Brandon Road roundabout, with diversion routes set up by National Highways in both the northbound and southbound directions.
Authorities are conducting an inquiry to ascertain the full details of the event, with Norfolk Constabulary having referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
