Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao are set to create history with a rematch at The Las Vegas Sphere, marking the first professional boxing bout held at this venue. The legendary boxers faced off previously in a highly anticipated bout known as the ‘Fight of the Century’ in 2015, where Mayweather emerged as the winner. Despite both fighters having retired from their illustrious careers, they are now preparing to square off once again.
Netflix has confirmed that Mayweather Pacquiao II is scheduled for September 19 at The Las Vegas Sphere, adding another major event to their streaming platform after broadcasting Anthony Joshua’s fight against Jake Paul last December. The upcoming rematch between Mayweather and Pacquiao is projected to be the most profitable in boxing history, with their previous encounter at the MGM Grand Garden Arena attracting massive pay-per-view buys totaling £4.6 million and setting a record gate of $72.2 million (£53.5 million).
In their initial fight, Mayweather reportedly earned $250 million (£185.3 million) while Pacquiao took home $150 million (£111.2 million). Mayweather, known as ‘Money,’ secured a victory on points in their previous match, maintaining his flawless 50-0 record. The upcoming rematch is expected to be a professionally sanctioned contest, putting Mayweather’s perfect record on the line once again.
Following the announcement of the rematch, Pacquiao expressed his excitement, stating, “The fans have waited long enough—they deserve this rematch, and it will be even bigger now that it will be streamed live globally on Netflix.” He added, “I want Floyd to live with the one loss on his professional record and always remember who gave it to him. As always, I dedicate this fight to my fellow Filipinos around the world and to bringing glory to the Philippines.”
Mayweather, on the other hand, confidently stated, “I already fought and beat Manny once. This time will be the same result.” Both fighters are expected to engage in warm-up fights before facing each other, with Pacquiao preparing to meet Ruslan Provodnikov while Mayweather is likely to fight Mike Tyson.
This highly anticipated fight will mark the first boxing event to headline The Sphere, following UFC 306 in September 2024.
