“McLaren Apologizes for Disqualification Drama in Las Vegas”

Share

McLaren has issued a formal apology to their drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, following their disqualification from the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Despite finishing in second and fourth place in the race, the McLaren team was summoned to the stewards due to concerns regarding the minimum width of the rear skid on their cars.

In a statement from McLaren team principal Andrea Stella, it was confirmed that the team had breached Article 3.5.9 of the Technical Regulations, which mandates a minimum skid thickness of 9mm. Car 4 exceeded this limit by 0.12mm, while Car 81 exceeded it by 0.26mm.

Stella explained that during the race, both cars experienced unexpected and excessive contact with the ground, known as porpoising, which was not observed during practice sessions. The team is investigating the reasons behind this behavior, including accidental damage sustained by the cars post-race, leading to increased movement of the floor.

Acknowledging that the breach was unintentional and without any deliberate attempt to violate regulations, McLaren expressed regret to Norris and Piastri for the loss of points at a crucial stage in their Championship campaigns. The team also extended apologies to their partners and fans for the incident and reassured their focus on the remaining two races of the season.

The disqualification has reshuffled the Drivers’ World Championship standings, with Norris leading with 390 points, followed by Piastri 24 points behind. Reigning champion Max Verstappen’s victory in the Las Vegas Grand Prix has tied him with Piastri, offering a slim chance for another title win.

Both Norris and Piastri expressed their disappointment over the disqualification, setting the stage for an intense battle in the final races of the 2025 season in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. The outcome remains uncertain, with all contenders eyeing the top spot and acknowledging the role luck may play in determining the ultimate winner.

Verstappen, reflecting on the race, emphasized the importance of car performance in upcoming races and hinted at the need for luck to close the gap at the top. With significant events anticipated at the Qatar and Abu Dhabi circuits, the season’s conclusion promises excitement and unpredictability for fans and drivers alike.
