After an action-packed series of events at the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games, the first segment of competition is coming to a close. The Corner Brook Civic Centre witnessed intense competition as ball hockey players from various regions of the province vied for medals on Tuesday.
In the gold medal match, Team Mount Pearl South emerged victorious against Team Avalon with a 4-3 scoreline. Paradise’s thirteen-year-old player, Raine Foss, netted the decisive goal and expressed his gratitude for the experience. “I passed it back to the defense, saw the opening, made my move, and scored,” Raine recounted. “Representing MPS is a fantastic opportunity that I cherish.”
Raine’s teammate, Reid Swain, shared his excitement about clinching the gold medal. “We’ve been putting in the work for the past few months, and we were uncertain about our chances. However, we pulled through, and it’s an amazing feeling,” Swain remarked.
Despite not achieving the desired medal color, Team Avalon’s Ryan Walsh departed Corner Brook with fond memories. Reflecting on his experience, Walsh stated, “Staying with the team and all the activities we engaged in was great fun.”
Team Central secured the bronze medal, a feat that brought immense pride to fourteen-year-old Jack Stone from Grand Falls-Windsor. “It’s truly exhilarating, you know? Going into a tournament with uncertainties and coming out with a medal is a great feeling,” Stone expressed.
The competition at the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games continues to be a platform for young athletes to showcase their talent and sportsmanship, creating lasting memories for all participants.
