Next is currently trialing advanced AI scanners that have the capability to detect stolen items concealed in undergarments such as bras and underwear. This cutting-edge technology operates by identifying changes in body heat and is adept at uncovering hidden weapons, explosives, cash, and narcotics.
The innovative “Thruvision Passive Terahertz Screening System” has undergone successful testing at Next UK warehouses and distribution centers, with potential plans for deployment in retail outlets in the near future. Steve Teatum, the Head of Group Loss Prevention at Next, discussed the system’s effectiveness on a recent episode of the Retail Crime Uncovered podcast, as reported by The Sun.
Teatum highlighted how the AI technology exposed individuals attempting to smuggle items by concealing them in intimate areas of their bodies, a tactic known as ‘Mules.’ The implementation of Thruvision significantly enhanced security measures by detecting items hidden in these areas that would otherwise go unnoticed during traditional screening processes.
The battle against theft continues to be a pressing issue, especially with shoplifting rates reaching record highs in England and Wales. Official statistics released in July indicated a 20% increase in theft offenses, totaling 530,643 incidents in the year leading up to March, marking the highest reported figure since police recording practices were established in 2003.
In another bid to combat theft, Home Bargains has integrated AI surveillance cameras to identify theft at self-checkout counters by detecting unscanned items. The retailer has partnered with tech companies SAI and Everseen for a trial program aimed at detecting and flagging “misscans” and “skip scans” at checkout, alerting staff to discrepancies in the items being purchased.
Paul Rowland, the operations director at Home Bargains, expressed satisfaction with the technology’s effectiveness, surpassing the capabilities of traditional security measures. This initiative forms part of a broader strategy to curb shoplifting in response to the surge in retail crime. Additionally, Home Bargains has introduced a confidential hotline for customers to report incidents of shoplifting and criminal activities at their stores, demonstrating a proactive stance against unlawful behavior.
