A significant road in the Peak District will be closed due to an expected heavy snowfall in the area. National Highways Yorkshire will shut down the A628 Woodhead Pass in both directions as the UK faces a severe storm.

The closure of the main road in the Peak District, between the A616 Flouch and A57 Hollingworth, is scheduled to start at 8 pm on Thursday, January 8 due to the anticipated snowfall. This decision is a precautionary measure against the heavy snow linked to Storm Goretti and an amber weather alert issued in the region.

National Highways highlighted a 21% increase in winter breakdowns on motorways and major A roads over the past five years, with over 67,000 incidents reported between December 2024 and February 2025. Slippery roads caused by adverse weather conditions remain a leading factor in serious accidents during winter.

To promote road safety this winter, National Highways launched the “T.R.I.P” campaign, advising road users to ensure their vehicles are fueled up, take regular breaks, check tire conditions, and prepare for varying weather conditions.

Additionally, an amber severe weather alert for snow has been issued for the West and East Midlands regions, effective from Thursday, January 8 at 6 pm to Friday, January 9 at 9 am. Snow accumulations are expected to range from 8 to 12cm on higher routes, with 10 to 15cm predicted around Birmingham, Leicester, and Nottingham.

Lower-level routes in the south and east of the East Midlands may experience between 3 to 8 cm of snow, while minimal snowfall of 0 to 2cm is anticipated in the far east and north of the East Midlands. Drivers are cautioned about challenging driving conditions in the Birmingham to Nottingham corridor.

The Met Office foresees further snow, strong winds, and heavy rain across the UK due to a deep area of low pressure. Various yellow and amber weather alerts have been issued nationwide as cold weather persists.

South and West Yorkshire are under an amber snow alert, while Greater Manchester faces a yellow weather warning. The Met Office advised against unnecessary travel in wintry conditions, suggesting alternative transport options for essential journeys to ensure safety.

Preparation, including route planning, monitoring for delays and road closures, and carrying essential items in the car, can enhance safety during snowy conditions. Road users are encouraged to pack necessities like warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, and emergency supplies in case of disruptions.
