Share

An urgent investigation by the police is currently ongoing following the discovery of a body in a river located in the Norfolk Broads.

Authorities, along with medical personnel, were dispatched to the River Waveney near the picturesque Beccles Marshes early on New Year’s Day. Witnesses at the scene reported that a body was retrieved from the water near a flyover bridge, prompting the immediate establishment of cordons. The riverside was lined with several police vehicles and forensic vans as officers secured sections of a nearby footpath.

A boat owner revealed that the unsettling discovery was made just inches away from their moored vessel. Suffolk Police later issued a statement seeking additional information after recovering the body of a woman, believed to be in her 60s or 70s, from the river. The circumstances surrounding her death are currently classified as “unexplained,” according to officials.

A man who had arrived at the location for a fishing trip that morning disclosed, “They recovered a body from the river this morning. When we arrived around 7.30 am, there was a significant presence of police, fire engines, and ambulances. Subsequently, they put up police tape, restricting access to the area.”

A spokesperson for Suffolk Police stated, “Police are requesting information following the discovery of a deceased woman in a river in Beccles.

“Authorities were alerted by a member of the public shortly after 8 am on Thursday, January 1, reporting the presence of a woman in the River Waveney at The Quay, beneath the bridge. Ambulance staff also responded and retrieved the woman from the river, where she was pronounced deceased.

“The incident is currently being treated as unexplained, with no indications of suspicious activity at this time. The Coroner has been informed. The woman’s identity remains unknown, and the police are seeking assistance from the public to determine her last movements.

“Detectives are interested in hearing from anyone who may have seen a woman matching the following description near The Quay before 8 am on that day: white, aged between 60 and 70, of small stature, with short curly brown/copper hair.

“She was dressed in a cream cardigan, blue top, white jeans, white boots, and may have been carrying a pink coat, torch, and umbrella.”

Individuals with relevant information are urged to contact East CID at Lowestoft Police Station, quoting reference CAD 135 of January 1.
