Lucy Powell has advised against fueling speculation about Keir Starmer’s leadership, urging those involved to refrain from such discussions as the Labour Party gears up for crucial elections in May.

Speaking to The Mirror, the party’s deputy leader expressed confidence that the polls would become more competitive, emphasizing the need for the party to be fully prepared for the challenges in 2026. With critical votes looming in England, Scotland, and Wales in just over four months, some Labour MPs are quietly contemplating the implications for Mr. Starmer’s future if the May elections turn unfavorably for the party.

Powell cautioned against excessive introspection when questioned about discussions regarding the Prime Minister’s tenure at Downing Street. She stressed the importance of focusing on improving the party’s performance rather than engaging in speculative debates about hypothetical scenarios. Powell highlighted the significance of shifting the narrative away from Westminster politics towards the real issues that voters will face in the upcoming elections.

Regarding the upcoming elections, Powell emphasized that voters will have a clear choice between supporting Labour or enabling Reform to gain a foothold in various regions. She underscored the tangible impacts these elections will have on services, local communities, as well as Scotland and Wales, urging voters to consider these factors rather than solely focusing on current perceptions of the Labour Party.

Powell acknowledged the setbacks of 2025, such as pension cuts and welfare policy failures, emphasizing the need for Labour to demonstrate a stronger sense of purpose and solidarity with the public. She pointed to recent progress made by the party, citing the Budget as a clear reflection of Labour’s values and commitments.

Looking ahead to 2026, Powell stressed the importance of addressing the cost of living crisis and economic inequalities to regain voter trust. She emphasized the need for Labour to communicate effectively how the party is working to rectify long-standing economic disparities and improve the lives of ordinary working families across the country.

Powell also commented on the potential return of Angela Rayner to a prominent government role, expressing support for her continued contributions to the party’s efforts. Unlike previous deputy leaders, Powell does not hold a government position but is expected to participate in high-level strategy discussions within the party leadership.
