The Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina experienced a power outage just 10 minutes after commencing. The curling events kicked off the Games, but had to be paused due to the sudden loss of power.
Even though the official Opening Ceremony at the San Siro was scheduled for Friday, some competitions had already started. The initial mixed doubles round robin matches in curling were interrupted by the power failure at the Olympic Ice Stadium.
Officials stopped play during the first end of the match between Britain’s Bruce Mouat and Jen Dodds against Norway. Despite the delay, the British athletes remained in good spirits, with Dodds even finding humor in the situation while officials worked to resolve the issue.
Commentator Steve Cram from the BBC chuckled at the incident, mentioning the power cut at the stadium and the challenges faced by the organizers. The pause in play was due to the scoring screens going blank, although most of the ice lights remained on.
The audience reacted positively when the lights flickered back on after a brief delay of approximately five minutes, allowing the competition to continue in the arena.
Dodds and Maout secured an 8-6 victory to kick off the round robin phase strongly, with Maout downplaying the disruption. He described the atmosphere as great, praised the venue and ice quality, and even joked about the lights going off, comparing it to a dance club experience.

With a total investment exceeding £32.5 million during the current four-year cycle for the Winter Olympics and Paralympics, UK Sport is determined to enhance the UK’s presence in winter sports and achieve greater success.
Eve Muirhead OBE, a gold medalist from Beijing 2022, has transitioned into a leadership role within Team GB for Milan-Cortina 2026. She expressed confidence in the team’s potential and their ability to challenge the norm despite facing challenges in accessing snow and ice compared to other nations.
