Republican lawmakers in Congress are showing support for President Donald Trump in his trade dispute with Canada while pointing fingers at Prime Minister Mark Carney’s administration for abandoning negotiations. A group of GOP House members met with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer for discussions on tariffs, with some expressing concerns about potential negative impacts on their reelection chances. Despite these concerns, many Republicans voiced backing for the president’s trade tactics. Texas Republican August Pfluger praised Trump for boosting U.S. manufacturing jobs and criticized Canada for their role in the trade conflict. Another Congressman, Brian Mast from Florida, also blamed Canada for the breakdown in trade talks. While Greer did not comment on negotiations with Canada, Trump reiterated his grievances against Canada’s banking policies, emphasizing their restrictions on U.S. banks in Canada. Despite public opposition to Trump’s tariffs, various Republican lawmakers defended his stance on the trade war, with Missouri Congressman Eric Burlison warning Canada against imposing counter-tariffs.
