Carley Fortune, a popular romance writer, has revealed that her upcoming novel, “Only in Summer,” will hit bookshelves on May 18, 2027. This new book revisits the charming town of Barry’s Bay, Ontario, a familiar setting from Fortune’s previous works, such as “Every Summer After” and “One Golden Summer,” as well as her hometown.
In a recent newsletter, Fortune shared her excitement about purchasing a cottage near Barry’s Bay before starting to write. Owning a cottage by the lake had been a long-standing dream for her since her family sold their lakeside home.
The protagonist of “Only in Summer,” Eleanor Florek, also harbors a similar dream. Known as Ellie, she is the cousin of Charlie and Sam from Fortune’s earlier Barry’s Bay stories. Ellie, who grew up in Barry’s Bay, saves up to buy her own property there, only to discover that the neighboring house is being torn down for a new owner’s mansion construction, leading to unexpected developments and, presumably, a blossoming romance in the lakeside backdrop.
Fortune, a writer and journalist based in Toronto, has an impressive editorial background with Refinery29, The Globe and Mail, Chatelaine, and Toronto Life. Her repertoire includes books like “Our Perfect Storm,” “One Golden Summer,” “Every Summer After,” “This Summer Will Be Different,” and “Meet Me at the Lake.” The latter was a notable contender on Canada Reads in 2024, championed by fashion influencer Mirian Njoh, marking the first romance novel featured on the program.
“Every Summer After” has been adapted into the Amazon Prime Video series “Every Year After,” which premiered recently and secured a second season renewal based on “One Golden Summer.” Furthermore, Netflix Canada is working on a 10-episode series adaptation of “This Summer Will Be Different.”
