Commuters in London experienced significant disruptions today as Waterloo Station was closed at the start of rush hour due to a security alert, according to authorities.

Transport for London confirmed the closure of the bustling commuter hub, which typically serves around 250,000 people daily. The British Transport Police responded to a report of a suspicious item at Waterloo Underground station early in the morning. Following a quick assessment, the item was determined to be non-suspicious.

National Express cautioned customers about road closures around Waterloo Underground station for New Year’s Eve celebrations, affecting travel plans. The A8 service would not be operating to Waterloo or Southwark overnight on December 31.

Despite the temporary closure, Waterloo Station was reported to be quieter than usual as commuters steered clear of the earlier security incident. TFL mentioned that the station was currently calm but anticipated an increase in activity.

Waterloo Station holds the record for being the most utilized station on the London Underground, with 77.39 million passengers in 2024. It is serviced by four lines: Bakerloo, Jubilee, Northern, and Waterloo & City.

Following the security alert, the Waterloo & City Line was temporarily suspended, causing inconvenience to passengers. The situation prompted TFL to inform commuters about the closure and offer alternative travel arrangements, with tickets being accepted on London Buses.

For the latest updates, passengers were encouraged to stay informed about the evolving situation at Waterloo Station and the Waterloo & City Line.
