SiriusXM’s Channel Change Sparks Controversy in Comedy

Share

Comedian Liz Miele has recently experienced a significant drop in her earnings, a setback shared by many others in the industry. SiriusXM has made the decision to discontinue its Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel, which previously showcased over 800 comedians on rotation. This channel has now been replaced by a new one owned by renowned comedian Sebastian Maniscalco.

The removal of the Raw Comedy channel has not only deprived Miele and numerous other working-class comedians of a vital income source but has also allowed affluent celebrity comics to dominate the platform. Miele revealed that Sirius XM had been crucial for her financial stability, emphasizing how the channel supported hundreds of comedians, enabling them to sustain themselves.

Maniscalco and SiriusXM have asserted that the new channel will offer opportunities for comedians at various career stages. However, industry advocacy group Stand Up for Standup has highlighted a disparity in the numbers. Prior to the change, Raw Comedy aired material from over 800 comedians monthly, providing them with $15 US in royalties per spin. In contrast, the revamped channel only featured 275 comedians last month, with the majority of plays favoring the top 50 artists.

Miele expressed her concern about the shift, noting the concentration of wealth among a select few comedians who are now earning substantially more, while others struggle. She emphasized the impact on future generations of comedians, lamenting the potential hindrance to newcomers breaking into the industry.

Canadian comedian Danish Anwar shared his experience of the financial repercussions, stating that his royalties from Raw Comedy have decreased significantly. He highlighted the importance of these royalties for many Canadian comics seeking to establish themselves in the U.S., as they rely on them to maintain their work visas.

Several prominent comedians, including Patton Oswalt and Michelle Wolf, have urged Maniscalco to provide opportunities for emerging comedians on the channel. Maniscalco, in response to the backlash, clarified that he was not involved in the decision to discontinue Raw Comedy. He pledged to collaborate with SiriusXM to ensure a diverse representation of comedians on his channel, acknowledging the challenges faced by comedians in the industry.

While some comedians, like Toronto-born Steph Tolev, have advocated for collective action to address the situation, Anwar remains skeptical about the effectiveness of such efforts with a U.S. company. He emphasized the need for solidarity within the comedy community to advocate for fair pay and better working conditions. Despite the challenges, comedians are determined to navigate the changing landscape of the industry.
