Romanian authorities formally charged social media influencer Andrew Tate with offenses including trafficking minors, money laundering, engaging in sexual acts with a minor, and tampering with witnesses. His brother, Tristan, was also indicted for complicity in the crimes. The Tate brothers, renowned former kickboxers holding dual U.S. and British citizenship, were apprehended in Miami in July following a request for their extradition from the UK.
Primarily residing in Romania since 2017, the brothers have been the subject of a criminal probe in the country since December 2022, facing allegations such as human trafficking. Despite the accusations, they have consistently denied any wrongdoing. Prosecutors in Romania alleged that the Tates enticed victims by deceiving them with promises of relationships or marriage, only to coerce them into producing explicit content for a webcam enterprise.
In response to the indictment, a Romanian lawyer representing the Tates, Eugen Vidineac, stated that they would scrutinize all aspects of the case and challenge any deficiencies through the appropriate legal channels. The accused individuals have continued to refute the charges against them.
The Tate brothers are currently in U.S. custody awaiting a ruling on their extradition to the UK, where they are wanted for alleged rape offenses. The Romanian anti-organized crime unit DIICOT, responsible for investigating the Tates, has not yet confirmed whether they will seek extradition of the brothers from the United States. While the possibility of a trial in absentia exists in Romania, proceedings will not commence immediately. According to Romanian law, the indictment will be reviewed by a preliminary court chamber, a process that typically extends beyond the stipulated 60-day timeframe.
The brothers were also accused of withholding a significant portion of a victim’s earnings from video chats and attempting to launder the proceeds through luxury car purchases. Despite prior indictments for human trafficking, a Romanian court of appeals remanded the case to prosecutors in late 2024 due to the exclusion of certain evidence. Andrew Tate, known for his controversial views, had previously expressed relocating to Romania due to perceived leniency in law enforcement.
Andrew and Tristan Tate have cultivated a substantial following, predominantly among young men, by projecting an extravagant, hyper-masculine persona characterized by fast cars and relationships with attractive women.
