A fortunate individual struck it rich when they stumbled upon a life-altering sum of money in an abandoned storage unit they had purchased for just under £400.
The buyer acquired the unit at an auction from Storage Wars auctioneer Dan Dotson, a popular US reality show where locked-up storage units are put up for sale to bidders in the hopes of finding a valuable stash. Without prior knowledge of the unit’s contents, the buyer was astounded by the discovery of a significant amount of money inside a locked safe.
Paying a mere $500 (£370) for the mystery unit, the buyer found a safe within it. Despite initial unsuccessful attempts to open the safe, a second person successfully unlocked it to reveal $7.5 million (£5.8m) in cash, as highlighted in a video shared on Facebook by Dotson.
The unexpected windfall left the auctioneer puzzled about the origin of the cash, speculating that it might have been abandoned. While this revelation changed the buyer’s life, it meant that the original owner had lost $7.5 million (£5.5 million). Subsequently, the original owners swiftly contacted their attorney upon learning of the sale and negotiated with the new owner to reclaim the money.
According to PEOPLE, the original owners initially offered $600,000 to retrieve the money but eventually settled on a deal where the new owner returned the cash in exchange for a $1.2 million (£900,000) reward. Despite not retaining the full amount, the buyer made a substantial profit of $1,499,500 (£1.1 million) from a $500 investment.
In the Facebook video, Dotson’s wife expressed reservations about the source of the money, while Dotson indicated that he would have accepted the $1.2 million reward to avoid potential complications with the former owners pursuing their money back.
