Share

Schools in Britain are closing early due to the impending arrival of Storm Goretti. The storm, named by Meteo France, is being characterized as a “multi-hazard event” by the Met Office. Weather experts are predicting up to 30cm (12 inches) of snow in various parts of England and Wales.

Weather warnings have been issued across the country for snow, wind, rain, and ice, with potential travel disruptions and power outages on the horizon. Concerns over the severe weather conditions have prompted school administrators in the South West, where winds could reach up to 100mph, to take precautionary measures, as reported by Cornwall Live.

With temperatures plummeting rapidly, the cold spell is expected to persist into the weekend, bringing blizzard conditions to parts of England, Wales, and Scotland. Neil Armstrong, the chief forecaster at the Met Office, emphasized that Storm Goretti will bring significant impacts from snow in Wales and the Midlands, along with very strong winds in the far South West. An amber warning has been issued for potential disruption on Thursday night into Friday morning.

The Met Office warns of travel disruptions on roads, air travel, and public transportation services, as well as the risk of power cuts. Some communities may face isolation, and mobile phone coverage could be affected. Snow warnings are in effect for 96 areas, with substantial snowfall expected in the Midlands and Wales, leading to the closure of over 1,000 schools across the UK.
