Share

The UK has been hit hard by Storm Goretti, causing widespread chaos. The Met Office issued a rare red wind warning for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly on January 8, alerting residents to severe gales of up to 100mph, posing a significant risk to life from flying debris.

Wind speeds reached 99mph on the Isles of Scilly, with a remarkable 123mph recorded at Stepper Point, Padstow by The National Coastwatch Institution. Cornwall Council advised against travel on January 9 due to the aftermath of Storm Goretti, as many roads remained blocked by fallen trees, debris, and downed power lines.

The council’s teams are tirelessly working to clear the affected areas, urging the public to allow them space to conduct urgent repairs safely.

A Cornwall resident, left without electricity due to the storm, shared their harrowing experience. Social media influencer Perrin Hooper, with a substantial following, posted a video recounting the intense weather conditions and power outages.

Perrin mentioned the unprecedented strength of the storm, with winds reaching 123mph nearby. Despite the situation, they praised the swift restoration of power in most areas affected by the storm.

Describing the ferocity of the weather, Perrin admitted to briefly stepping onto their balcony during the storm, emphasizing safety precautions taken despite the urge to experience the tempest firsthand.

Viewers responded to the video, sharing their own experiences of the storm’s impact, including power outages and structural concerns. Schools in Cornwall are facing closures and delays due to the aftermath of the storm, with safety and access issues being addressed across the region.
