“Tech Company Develops Solution to Save Eels at Hydro Dams”

Share

In our weekly newsletter, we focus on environmental trends and solutions driving us towards a more sustainable world. When we learned about the issue of eels facing high mortality rates at hydro dams, it raised concerns about their safety during migration. A tech company is developing a solution to address this problem.

This week’s featured topics include the ongoing challenges of eels facing hydro dam turbines, the functionality of heat pumps, and the recent sighting of an airship above a central Alberta town.

Every year, American eels undertake a perilous journey down the St. Lawrence River towards their breeding grounds in the Caribbean. Unfortunately, many eels perish due to collisions with hydroelectric dam turbines, contributing to a significant decline in their population since the 1970s. Natel Energy, a California-based startup specializing in fish-friendly turbines, has designed a new turbine runner to prevent these fatalities without compromising power generation efficiency.

American eels, the only truly catadromous species in Canada, play a vital role in the region’s biodiversity and hold cultural significance for Indigenous communities. Due to factors like overfishing, habitat loss, and hydroelectric dams, their numbers have drastically declined over the years. Efforts to protect eels include banning commercial fishing in Ontario and implementing programs to aid their migration past hydro plants.

Natel’s innovative “FishSafe” turbine design aims to reduce fish mortality by providing a more fish-friendly blade shape and minimizing the risk of fish entrapment. Computer simulations suggest that this new design could significantly increase the survival rate of American eels passing through hydro dams.

The company’s objective is to demonstrate that prioritizing fish survival can coexist with efficient power generation in aging hydropower plants. By showcasing successful installations in Europe and engaging with Canadian companies, Natel Energy hopes to revolutionize the protection of American eel populations.

The recent sighting of a solar-powered airship conducting aerial survey tests in central Alberta generated curiosity among locals. This innovative technology, developed by Cloudline and 3 Points in Space Media, offers a unique approach to collecting data for various industries, including energy and infrastructure. The airship’s capabilities in remote data collection and long-distance survey flights present a promising alternative to traditional aircraft and drones.

As the airship undergoes further testing in different environments, the potential for its application in various sectors, including pipeline inspection and infrastructure monitoring, becomes increasingly evident. The successful integration of this technology could reshape data collection practices and aerial surveillance methods in the future.
