Luke Littler shared that a remark from Ricardo Pietreczko fueled his determination to defeat the German player 10-6 and secure a spot in the quarter-finals of the Players Championship Finals. Despite initially trailing 3-1 to Pietreczko, the 18-year-old, nicknamed ‘The Nuke,’ staged a comeback by clinching nine out of the next 12 legs with a remarkable performance, ultimately advancing to the last eight in Minehead.
Littler’s impressive turnaround was partly motivated by a comment Pietreczko made during the interval when the score was tied at five each. Recounting the incident post-match, Littler revealed, “We returned at 5-5, and he mentioned, ‘I was only expecting to win one leg, and now I have five.’ That fueled my determination, and I silently vowed to win the game, which led to my celebratory gestures.”
The young sensation, born in 2007, recently attained the top ranking in the world following his victory at the Grand Slam, showcasing an average of 102.67 and hitting six 180s in a dominant display of scoring prowess. Additionally, Littler recreated a contentious 121 finish from a previous encounter with Pietreczko, executing it in his signature style: bull, treble 7, bull.
Reflecting on his performance, Littler expressed his resolve to improve, stating, “I wasn’t satisfied with being behind at 3-2, but I managed to even the score at five-all and pushed forward. Despite some shortcomings in my doubles game tonight, I aim to sharpen my skills for tomorrow’s matches.”
Littler is set to face world No.9 Chris Dobey in the upcoming quarter-final matchup, with a potential semi-final clash against the winner of Gerwyn Price versus Daryl Gurney. Other quarter-final matchups include Nathan Aspinall against Josh Rock and James Wade taking on Jermaine Wattimena in the afternoon session at the Players Championship Finals.
