The mayor of The Pas has stepped down from his position shortly before the upcoming local election and has decided not to seek re-election. Andre Murphy, who was elected as mayor of the northern Manitoba town in 2022, made the announcement online on Monday evening, stating that he was resigning with immediate effect.
Confirming his resignation to CBC News, Murphy stated that he will not be running for re-election this fall. With his resignation, The Pas will be without a mayor for nine weeks until new councils are elected on October 28 in The Pas and other municipalities across Manitoba.
Deputy mayor Carrie Atkinson will take on most of Murphy’s responsibilities until the election day. Murphy revealed that he and his family reached the decision last week and informed the council on Monday. Initially considering running for another four-year term, he ultimately changed his mind during the summer.
Expressing his commitment to decisions once made, Murphy emphasized his dedication to the community and the honor of representing it for another term. He highlighted that family considerations played a significant role in their choice to step down.
Reflecting on his time as mayor, Murphy underscored his achievements in fostering collaboration with neighboring communities, addressing local challenges, and securing substantial grants for recreational and infrastructure projects. He expressed confidence in the town’s council and administration to continue the positive trajectory he helped set.
Murphy expressed his optimism for the future of The Pas and northern Manitoba, citing upcoming opportunities for growth and development. He emphasized his continued support for the town’s progress even after his resignation.
CBC News has contacted town councillors in The Pas for their responses to Murphy’s resignation.
