Timpson, a popular chain specializing in shoe repair, has introduced a new service allowing customers to trade in their old mobile phones. Partnering with musicMagpie, a gadget resell company, and its owner AO, Timpson now offers a quick and convenient way for individuals to receive cash for their unwanted handsets at any of its 1,300 stores across the UK.
Recent research indicates that 73% of adults in the UK possess at least one unused smartphone at home, with an average trade-in value of approximately £250. The total value of these unused devices is estimated to be around £10 billion. Despite numerous online resale options available, Timpson aims to cater to customers who prefer face-to-face transactions, although similar high-street alternatives already exist.
A survey revealed that 68% of people prefer trading in their devices in person, with one in four emphasizing the importance of receiving immediate payment. Timpson and musicMagpie initially trialed the trade-in service four months ago and have now expanded it to over 1,300 Timpson stores nationwide.
John Roberts, the CEO and founder of AO World, highlighted the ease of trading in old tech through Timpson, emphasizing the convenience of receiving cash within minutes at any of their locations. This initiative stems from AO World’s acquisition of musicMagpie in 2024, showcasing the significant potential of their partnership.
Steve Oliver, the managing director and co-founder of musicMagpie, expressed excitement about the collaboration with Timpson, extending their reach and convenience for customers across the UK. Sid Hubbard, Timpson’s group director, emphasized the trusted reputation of Timpson’s staff and the added value this new service brings to both new and existing customers.
With a legacy of over 150 years in repairing goods, Timpson is pleased to expand its services to include smartphone trade-ins in partnership with musicMagpie, providing customers with a seamless and reliable option to unlock the value of their old devices instantly.
