“TNT Sports Faces Backlash Over Ashes Coverage”

Share

TNT Sports faced backlash for their coverage of the opening day of The Ashes, with disappointed viewers expressing their frustration on social media. Despite securing the broadcasting rights for the prestigious Test cricket event, criticism mounted over what was perceived as subpar broadcasting quality.

Viewers who tuned in at 1:30 am were met with what they described as amateurish and uninformed coverage. The main point of contention was that some commentators appeared to be remotely located, evident when they greeted viewers with “good morning” while the matches were actually taking place in the afternoon.

Criticism also centered around the absence of iconic cricket figures in the commentary team, with viewers lamenting the lack of analysis and the feeling that the commentators were not providing an immersive experience reminiscent of being in Australia.

The discontent extended to the choice of lead commentators Alastair Eykyn and Rob Hatch, who were criticized for their perceived lack of cricket expertise and for not being physically present at the event. While TNT Sports defended the commentators’ backgrounds in rugby and cycling, fans expressed disappointment over the decision to have non-cricket experts as the main voices of the coverage.

The match itself saw England facing early setbacks, with Zak Crawley’s dismissal by Mitchell Starc setting the tone for a challenging first innings. Starc further compounded England’s woes by claiming three more wickets, limiting them to a total of 172 runs. However, Australia faced resistance from England’s bowlers, with Jofra Archer and captain Ben Stokes making crucial breakthroughs to keep the match finely poised.

Starc’s dismissal by Brydon Carse and Stokes’ subsequent five-wicket haul tilted the balance in England’s favor by the end of the first day’s play, setting the stage for an intriguing continuation of the Ashes series.
