A suspect, Roshvin Crofton, 24, has been apprehended by Toronto police for his alleged involvement in setting several cars on fire at the residence of a Scarborough MP. The charges against Crofton include arson causing property damage, mischief exceeding $5,000, conspiracy to commit a serious offense, possessing incendiary materials, and violating probation orders.

A 2025 Hyundai Sonata, believed to be linked to the incident, was confiscated. Authorities are seeking information about the vehicle’s whereabouts before the arson incident. Additionally, a second suspect is being pursued by law enforcement.

The arson took place in the driveway of Liberal MP Salma Zahid, who represents the federal riding of Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East. An unidentified individual reportedly poured accelerant on the vehicles on August 27, setting two cars ablaze before fleeing the scene. A third vehicle sustained damage from the flames.

Zahid expressed gratitude towards the Toronto police for the arrest but mentioned that the motive behind the incident remains unknown. She stated that further comments would be made once more details emerge from the ongoing investigation.

Zahid, serving as a Liberal backbencher since 2015, holds positions as the chair of the standing committee on science and research and vice-chair of the Canada-China legislative association. The incident elicited strong criticism from various politicians, with Prime Minister Mark Carney denouncing it as a “cowardly act of violence and intimidation.”
