An orphaned eight-year-old girl made a heartbreaking discovery when she found her entire family dead in the basement of their home. The tragic incident unfolded as each family member went into the cellar one by one, never to return.
The sequence of events began with Maria Chelyshev’s father, Mikhail Chelyshev, a respected law professor, entering the basement. Concerned when he didn’t return, Maria’s mother, Anastasia, went to look for him and also succumbed to the toxic gas present in the cellar. Their son Georgy then met the same fate when he went searching for his parents. Anastasia’s mother, Iraida, sensing trouble, sought help from a neighbor but tragically perished in the cellar alongside the others.
The story, recently shared on Reddit, sparked emotional responses from users reflecting on the tragedy of a child witnessing her family’s demise. The fatal gas that claimed their lives was later revealed to have been emitted by decaying potatoes stored in the cellar. The little girl was spared as she had not ventured into the area where the toxic vegetables were kept.
The devastating incident occurred in Laishevo, near Kazan, in the Russian republic of Tatarstan in 2014. An investigation concluded that the family died from gas poisoning caused by rotting potatoes releasing harmful compounds. Experts emphasized the importance of proper potato storage throughout the year to prevent such tragedies, advising to discard green, sprouted, or decaying potatoes and to store them in a cool, dark place away from light exposure.
Potatoes contain glycoalkaloids, including solanine and chaconine, which can impact the nervous system, leading to weakness and confusion if ingested. To avoid such risks, it is crucial to inspect potatoes for signs of decay, mold, or sprouting before consumption, and to ventilate and clean storage areas if potatoes have spoiled.
Remember to prioritize safety when handling and storing potatoes to prevent accidental poisoning and ensure the well-being of your household.
