A mother and her two young children lost their lives in a devastating house fire that engulfed their residence on Boxing Day. Fionnghuala Shearman, also known as Nu, tragically perished along with her seven-year-old daughter, Eve, and four-year-old son, Ohner, in the blaze that occurred on Brimscombe Hill near Stroud. Her husband, Tom, a dedicated Gloucestershire police officer, sustained injuries while trying to rescue his family and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Emergency services responded to the scene around 3 am where Mr. Shearman bravely attempted to save his loved ones but was forced back by the intense flames. Detective Superintendent Ian Fletcher explained that the parents were awakened by the fire and made multiple efforts to reach their children in the rear bedroom, but the fire’s intensity prevented them from doing so.
The fire, believed to have originated on the ground floor, caused significant structural damage to the cottage. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause, with authorities ruling out any suspicious circumstances. Mrs. Shearman, a Cheltenham native who operated a business called Hide and Hammer, regularly shared family photos on social media and was an avid runner.
Despite the heartbreaking loss, the surviving family member, a police officer, is cooperating with authorities to ascertain the events leading to the tragedy. Colleagues and witnesses described the father’s anguish and desperate attempts to rescue his family, highlighting the emotional toll of the devastating incident. The Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue Service faced difficult conditions while battling the blaze and attempting to save the occupants.
The Gloucestershire Police Federation expressed deep sorrow over the tragic event, offering support to the affected officer and their colleagues. The entire police community and the nation at large stand in solidarity with the family during this difficult period. The community’s outpouring of condolences and support is acknowledged and appreciated by those affected.
