Trump Shifts Stance on Putin’s Drone Claims

Share

Donald Trump has made a significant shift in his stance regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s claims of a Ukrainian drone strike on one of his properties. This change follows a CIA briefing that revealed no evidence to support the allegations.

The adjustment in Trump’s position coincides with escalating pressure on US-led peace talks concerning the conflict in Ukraine. Initially reacting with anger to the alleged attack, Trump has since cast doubt on the claims by sharing a critical editorial from the New York Post on Truth Social.

The editorial, titled “Putin ‘attack’ bluster shows Russia is the one standing in the way of peace,” accuses the Kremlin of fabricating the incident to disrupt diplomatic efforts.

By reposting this article, Trump has made a notable reversal from his previous acceptance of the Russian narrative. The dispute began after Putin asserted during a phone call on December 29 that Ukraine had launched over 90 drones at a property in the Novgorod region. At Mar-a-Lago that same day, alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump expressed his displeasure with the claim, stating, “I am very angry about the claim. This is not the right time.”

While initially giving credence to Putin’s account, Trump reconsidered after a CIA assessment on December 31, briefed by Director John Ratcliffe, concluded that Ukraine was not targeting Putin’s residence. US intelligence indicated that the drones were directed at a nearby military installation that had been previously targeted, showing no intention to strike personal properties.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky refuted the accusation, labeling it as a complete fabrication. Despite Russian officials releasing footage of downed drones, they provided no evidence linking them to Putin’s residence, reporting that 91 drones were intercepted without causing damage or casualties.

This incident occurs amidst a backdrop of escalating drone attacks from both sides. On December 31, Russian-appointed Kherson governor Vladimir Saldo alleged that Ukrainian drones had targeted a cafe and hotel in the occupied village of Khorly, resulting in casualties.

While Ukrainian officials have not confirmed their involvement, independent verification remains lacking. Pro-Ukraine sources emphasize the absence of credible evidence beyond Russian state media reports. Experts suggest that Putin’s drone allegations may be a tactic to disrupt American peace efforts, including ceasefire proposals and territorial compromises.

EU officials share US doubts and condemn civilian targeting, advocating for de-escalation. As tensions rise with Ukraine targeting Russian oil facilities and Moscow retaliating against Odesa, the incident underscores the challenges in diplomatic relations. Trump’s shift in stance could strain US-Russia ties, although he has refrained from further comments.

White House officials declined requests for clarification, with insiders indicating that the CIA’s evidence prompted Trump’s reconsideration. Amid stalled peace negotiations, this episode highlights the complexities of information conflicts in times of war.
