“Trump’s Venezuela Regime Change Sparks Global Disruption”

Share

Nicholas Maduro, the former bus driver turned influential leader of Venezuela, has faced widespread disapproval from many following his removal from power.

However, the method of his removal orchestrated by Donald Trump has once again disrupted global order. This action, along with other initiatives targeting Venezuela, showcases the assertive nature of the US President’s foreign policy approach. From ambitions regarding Greenland to reclaiming the Panama Canal, the move to instigate regime change in Venezuela underscores the US administration’s aggressive stance. The lack of clear international support for the US actions highlights the questionable legality of its involvement in Venezuela.

While some argue that Maduro, who succeeded Hugo Chavez and oversaw a shift towards authoritarianism in Venezuela, lacked legitimacy, the country’s economic decline from a once prosperous nation to a struggling economy is evident. Once known for its beauty and vibrancy, Venezuela has now transformed into an economic crisis. Although Maduro’s democratic standing was in question, especially after the opposition’s apparent victory in the 2024 presidential race, the justification for external intervention based solely on this premise remains controversial. The interest in Venezuela’s oil reserves, particularly to safeguard the operations of Chevron, a major US oil company in the region, has played a significant role in the US stance towards Maduro.

The situation was not primarily driven by concerns over narcotics. Trump’s substantial military presence in the Caribbean compelled action until a tangible outcome was achieved. Despite awaiting further details, the apparent outcome appears to be a strategic win for Trump, while it signifies a setback for Venezuela’s traditional allies, namely Russia, China, and Iran.

The development puts the UK in a delicate position as it distanced itself from the intervention in Venezuela. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and European leaders are likely unsettled by the questionable legality of the operation. While Maduro’s departure may offer some hope for Venezuela, the manner in which it was orchestrated raises concerns about the impact on global order. The US, positioning itself as a revisionist power, is shifting the global landscape, yet its actions border on that of a rogue state, posing challenges for its traditional allies who rely on its leadership in defending liberal democracies and free trade.
