A deceased dog was discovered in a freezer, while 26 other dogs were found crammed into a bedroom within the same residence. Following a police warrant execution at the property, two individuals have been charged with animal welfare violations. The dogs were found confined in crates and living in inadequate conditions, prompting immediate seizure of several animals for their well-being.
The shocking discovery was made by Lancashire Constabulary’s Dangerous Dog Unit, in collaboration with Blackburn with Darwen Neighbourhood Policing Team, RSPCA, and Blackburn with Darwen Trading Standards. The operation took place at a property on Emily Street, Blackburn, where the distressing conditions came to light.
Upon investigation, it was revealed that the dogs were living in substandard conditions, with one dog found deceased in a freezer. Consequently, Lee Wright, 38, residing on Emily Street, Blackburn, was charged with violating a disqualification order and appeared at Blackburn Magistrates’ Court on December 17. Wright admitted guilt during the hearing, with sentencing scheduled for February next year.
Following a veterinary examination of some of the seized dogs, it was determined that they had sustained injuries causing them to suffer. As a result, officers revisited the property alongside the RSPCA and removed the remaining dogs for their safety.
In addition to Wright, Paige Carrington, 27, of Stansfeld Street, Blackburn, was also arrested and charged with causing unnecessary suffering to an animal under the Animal Welfare Act. Wright, who has a history of animal welfare offenses, is facing a 10-year disqualification order from keeping dogs. Both individuals are scheduled for court appearances in January 2023.
