“U.S. Envoys Meet with Ukraine, Seek Resolution”

U.S. diplomats Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner engaged in “positive” discussions in Kyiv on Sunday during their inaugural trip to Ukraine as part of an intensified effort to resolve over 4½ years of Russia’s full-scale invasion. This visit by the American envoys came after a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday, amid escalating aerial attacks by both sides. The U.S. administration’s focus on ending the conflict lost momentum over the past six months due to prioritizing the Iran situation.

Russia has recently employed fast-flying, jet-powered drones, leading to daily air-raid sirens becoming a common sound in Kyiv. Progress along the 1,250-kilometer front line has been challenging for troops. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the objective of achieving a “just, fair peace” that would prevent any future aggression against Ukraine. He expressed gratitude to the American negotiators for their maiden visit to Ukraine and announced that the next round of talks would involve national security advisers from Britain, France, and Germany.

“We had substantive, important, and very encouraging discussions,” stated Witkoff regarding the talks. Kushner highlighted President Donald Trump’s view that it is essential to not only end the current conflict but also establish conditions for lasting peace. A senior Ukrainian official, speaking anonymously, revealed that much of the dialogue focused on strategies to navigate through the upcoming winter and take action before then.

In a meeting held behind closed doors in Moscow on Saturday, lasting over three hours, no significant developments were publicly disclosed. Putin’s foreign policy adviser, Yuri Ushakov, described the talks as constructive, candid, and beneficial, although specific outcomes were not divulged. While Moscow provided a “comprehensive assessment” of the situation on the battlefield in Ukraine, discussions also delved into economic matters and potential joint projects beneficial to both Russia and the U.S.

Despite an agreement between Putin and Zelenskyy to halt strikes on each other’s capitals during the talks, exchanges of fire persisted, resulting in casualties and injuries on both sides. The Ukrainian air force reported intercepting a significant number of drones and missiles launched by Russia, while Russia claimed to have shot down numerous Ukrainian drones over various regions.

On the ground in Kyiv, a moment of silence was observed to honor Ukraine’s fallen soldiers, with citizens expressing mixed hopes about the potential outcomes of the ongoing negotiations. While some, like Nataliia Lipei, remain optimistic that the talks will lead to a resolution and halt the bloodshed, others, such as Oleksandr Pastukhov, are skeptical about the impact of diplomatic efforts. Pope Leo also extended prayers for peace in Ukraine, expressing hope that the negotiation efforts will yield positive results.
