The U.S. trade envoy under Donald Trump’s administration stated that any retaliation from Canada would not be tolerated if the President proceeds with imposing new tariffs. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer emphasized that the measures are aimed at safeguarding domestic supply chains and are not solely targeted at Canada but are part of a global strategy. Greer highlighted that any retaliatory actions against the U.S. would result in further measures being taken.
Recent trade discussions between Canada and the U.S. have intensified following Trump’s threat to impose a significant 50 percent tariff on numerous Canadian products beginning on August 19. Greer described the ongoing talks with Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc as productive and noted Canada’s inclination towards a more conciliatory approach.
With the looming tariff deadline, both sides are working towards finding common ground. The U.S. is keen on executing President Trump’s trade policies, while Canada is pushing for resolutions on existing tariffs in sectors such as automotive and steel industries. Despite some progress in negotiations, differences remain on certain issues, including retaliatory tariffs and alcohol bans.
The Bloc Québécois Leader expressed skepticism about an imminent trade deal and cautioned against compromising on dairy negotiations. The U.S. is perceived as becoming more demanding in recent days, posing challenges to reaching a satisfactory agreement. Former Canadian ambassador Frank McKenna countered U.S. claims, asserting that Canada is merely defending itself against unfair and illegal measures.
As the trade dispute unfolds, the U.S. and Canada continue to navigate complex trade issues, with efforts focused on finding mutually beneficial solutions while addressing key concerns from both sides.
