UK Braces for Severe Winter Storms: Snow Expected in Major Cities

Share

Next week, the UK may experience disruptive wintry conditions with the likelihood of snow in various cities. Advanced weather models indicate an approaching storm expected to traverse the UK on January 27, initially affecting Wales, particularly Cardiff and Swansea, with heavy rain anticipated in Northern Ireland and the southwest of England.

By approximately 3 am, the ECMWF model projects the snow shifting northward and eastward, leading to significant snowfall in Northern Ireland, especially in Belfast. Cities like Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, and London could also witness snow around this time, covering a substantial portion of England.

Weather maps for 6 am suggest additional heavy snow across England and southern Scotland, possibly falling at a rate of about one inch per hour. Snow showers are also possible in northern Scotland. Later, around 9 am, East Anglia and Kent might experience snow as the blizzard progresses eastward, extending the snow coverage from the South Coast to northern Scotland.

Snow depth predictions indicate significant accumulations, with up to 55cm (22 inches) expected in the Scottish Highlands, 6cm (two inches) in northern England, and similar amounts in Wales and the Midlands. The Met Office also forecasts the potential for snow next week, predominantly over hills but with the chance of snowfall in other regions as well.

Looking ahead to February, the Met Office anticipates weather systems moving in from the Atlantic, leading to periods of rain or heavy showers, particularly in the south and west. While milder conditions may affect the south and southwest, colder air from the northeast could bring wintry showers, potentially resulting in snow across hills and possibly in other areas.

From February 6 to 20, a similar weather pattern is expected, with wetter conditions likely in central and southern areas due to Atlantic frontal systems. Northern and northwestern parts of the UK may experience drier weather, while colder conditions in the north and northeast could bring wintry hazards, especially in hillier areas.
