“UK Drivers Urged to Prep for Winter: Tips to Prevent Breakdowns”

Share

As freezing temperatures grip the UK, drivers are being advised to conduct necessary vehicle checks to prevent breakdowns and accidents in the icy winter conditions. Recent reports suggest prolonged blizzards could hit the country later this month, following snowfall and the aftermath of Storm Goretti.

Concerned individuals are turning to social platforms like Reddit for winter car preparation tips amidst heavy snow and ice, emphasizing the importance of seeking expert guidance.

Andy Watt, Group Vice President for Mercedes-Benz at Stratstone, has shared practical advice on winter driving safety, including tips on tire grip, battery maintenance, visibility, winter kits, and cold weather readiness.

Watt emphasized the significance of checking essential car components before traveling in winter conditions to reduce breakdown risks and potential stranding incidents. He highlighted the importance of maintaining adequate tire tread depth and proper tire pressure for improved grip and safety.

In addressing challenges faced by rear-wheel drive vehicles in snow, Watt recommended adding weight to the boot or using snow chains on rear wheels to enhance traction and stability.

As winter poses battery-related challenges, Watt advised drivers to test or replace batteries older than four years to prevent breakdowns caused by cold weather demands on vehicle power.

To prevent engine damage, Watt stressed the necessity of topping up coolant with antifreeze and ensuring regular checks on screenwash levels to combat dirty roads and spray during winter.

For essential journeys in snowy or icy conditions, having a winter kit in the car containing items like blankets, a torch, shovel, snacks, water, and a hi-vis vest can be crucial in case of emergencies or breakdowns.

Maintaining clean, bright, and functional lights during winter is vital for visibility and legal compliance. Watt recommended carrying spare bulbs and regularly inspecting lights to ensure safety on the road.

Lastly, Watt cautioned against using boiling water to clear ice from windscreens, as it can lead to instant cracking and costly repairs. Instead, he advised using a scraper, de-icer spray, or starting the car with the heater on to safely remove ice without damaging the windscreen.
