“UK Faces Rare Weather Phenomenon: Freezing Rain Alert”

Share

A rare and potentially hazardous weather phenomenon is expected to accompany significant snowfall throughout the UK. The Met Office has issued multiple warnings covering various parts of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland until midnight on Sunday. Northern and eastern Scotland will face an amber warning on Friday and Saturday, with up to 15 inches of snow forecasted.

The national weather service anticipates travel disruptions and potential cancellations, with rural communities at risk of being isolated. Power outages are also a possibility. Advanced weather models indicate the likelihood of more snow next week, along with the occurrence of freezing rain. The GFS weather model predicts freezing rain affecting Gloucestershire around 3am next Wednesday.

By 6pm, freezing rain is projected to fall in the north-west of England, followed by another round around 9pm in Scotland, potentially impacting Glasgow. Freezing rain, described by the Met Office as a rare form of liquid precipitation that freezes almost instantly upon contact with a cold surface, poses significant risks. The formation of freezing rain involves snow turning into rain in warm air, then refreezing upon encountering colder air, resulting in supercooled droplets that instantly freeze upon hitting the ground.

The Met Office warns that freezing rain can be extremely perilous for aircraft and can lead to tree and power line damage due to the weight of ice accumulation. Roads and walkways can become dangerously slippery. America’s National Weather Service highlights that bridges, overpasses, and elevated roadways are particularly vulnerable to icing caused by freezing rain, which can also increase the risk of tree and power line failures.
