Helmut Marko has disclosed that Max Verstappen felt saddened by the news of the veteran Austrian’s departure from the Red Bull team. Marko also stated that the four-time Formula 1 World champion would leave as well if the team fails to maintain a conducive environment for his success.
The 82-year-old will be stepping down at the end of the year after serving as an advisor to the team for two decades and overseeing their junior driver program. Marko introduced Verstappen to Red Bull as a promising young talent, beating out competition from Mercedes.
Their bond was exceptionally strong, with Verstappen publicly supporting Marko during internal conflicts at Red Bull. Verstappen even referred to Marko as a ‘second father’ and hinted at considering leaving the team if Marko departed.
In an interview with Austrian publication Kleine Zeitung, Marko shared Verstappen’s reaction to his departure, mentioning various memorable moments they shared. Marko dismissed concerns about Verstappen leaving Red Bull, confirming that Verstappen respected his decision.
However, Marko emphasized that Red Bull must provide a harmonious environment for Verstappen to succeed, stating that if this condition is not met, Verstappen would leave abruptly. Marko clarified that although there were tensions with Red Bull’s Salzburg hierarchy, he was leaving by his own choice.
Allegations of Marko signing a driver without authorization and subsequent contract cancellation were denied by Marko as baseless rumors. He attributed the claims to misinformation circulated by the British press.
