An incident of human error led to the mistaken cremation of a body at a hospital mortuary, prompting a thorough investigation by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC). Staff members involved in the mix-up have been suspended, and the affected families have been notified of the error at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in the city.

NHSGGC issued an apology after mistakenly releasing the body to undertakers, resulting in the cremation of the wrong individual. This error was discovered post-cremation, causing distress to two families who were already coping with a difficult time.

The health board, considered Scotland’s largest, acknowledged the additional distress caused to the families due to the wrongful release of the body from the mortuary. The incident, attributed to human error, occurred at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

Affected families received support and were informed of the situation promptly following the incident, which reportedly occurred last month. An insider described the families as inconsolable and emphasized the need for swift answers and reforms to prevent such mistakes in the future.

Scottish Conservative shadow public health minister Brian Whittle criticized the lapse in basic procedures that led to devastating consequences for the affected families. Dr. Scott Davidson, the medical director at NHSGGC, extended sincere apologies to the families, highlighting the hospital’s typically stringent processes for body identification in the mortuary.

The Scottish Government expressed condolences to the families involved and urged NHSGGC to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the regrettable incident.
