Mark Zuckerberg is under scrutiny following reports that his yacht crew did not respond to a distress call from another vessel last week near Alaska. The Alaska Beacon disclosed that a small boat stranded without fuel sought help on August 3, and the nearby vessel Wilderness Legacy assisted by towing it to Farragut Bay in southeast Alaska.
According to maritime law, ships are obligated to aid in distress situations unless it jeopardizes their safety. Maritime law expert Ian Ralby emphasized the duty to rescue individuals at sea to mitigate risks associated with maritime activities.
Despite being closer to the scene, Zuckerberg’s yacht, named Launchpad, did not acknowledge the distress call. A representative for Zuckerberg cited that the crew did not hear the call initially, and by the time they were aware, another nearby ship had already intervened.
The spokesperson clarified that the Coast Guard confirmed the boat was not in distress, and the crew only learned of the situation after reviewing a different radio channel. The incident occurred when Zuckerberg and his family were not on board the yacht.
